Bacteriophage phi29. Computer model of phi29 created using UCSF Chimera molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. Phi29 only infects Bacillus subtilis. The virus is seen looking from the 'tail' end (red) up towards the virus 'head' (yellow, green, blue) which contains DNA. The tail contains a molecular motor that powers the packaging of DNA within the virus. Cryo-electron microscopes fire beams of electrons at multiple angles at specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The microscope collects 'slices' of data that are constructed into 3-D models by computer software such as UCSF Chimera.
