Theinterrupter could also be adjusted for advance and retardposition. The low-tension distributor at this stage practi-cally disappeared, and in its place came the high-tensiondistributor, which eliminated all but one coil. Also at thisstage all direct current tj^pee of magnetos were discardedand the alternating current type was used, arranged so thatthe time of break in the interrupter occurred at the peakof the wave. This system of ignition is one that ismost commonly employed in all recent internal combustionengines especially with the high power, high speed engines, such as those used in automibles, aeroplanes, and motor boats. The scope of this paper is to present the operatingcharacteristics of this system which may however be sub-div
