Potassium nitrate crystals. Differential interference contrast light micrograph of crystals of potassium nitrate (KNO3), a chemical compound used in fertilizers, food additives, rocket propellants and fireworks. It is one of the constituents of gunpowder. This chemical exhibits anisotropic structural properties in its crystalline form, giving rise to acicular or needle-shaped crystals. Magnification: x25 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
