Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the pituitary gland of a gonadectomized rat. One of most common procedures to identify the cell type that produces a hormone is to induce an experimental atrophy or hypertrophy of the cell. The coloured cell is a gonadotrope. It has swollen rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) cisterns (red) that are producing higher amounts of follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormone (FSH/LH) secretory granules (dark blue) than normal. Also seen are mitochondria (green), Golgi apparatus (light blue) and the nucleus (purple).
