Cefalu, Sicily, Italy: I’m watching you … a young Carabiniere, an armed officer in Italy’s Arma dei Carabinieri military police force, is tight lipped as he leans, arms folded, against his Fiat patrol car parked off Via Seminario below the forecourt terrace of the city’s cathedral, the Duomo di Cefalu, and stares with piercing eyes directly at the camera. The officer wears summer uniform: a peaked cap, short sleeved blue shirt, flat black shoes and black trousers bearing the distinctive Carabinieri vertical red stripe, plus a black and red diagonal strap over his right shoulder supporting a wide Sam Browne belt carrying a holster for his Beretta pistol. The Carabinieri, formed in 1814, is the national military police force of Italy, policing both military and civil populations. It fought alongside regular soldiers in both world wars and in 2000, it became one of the four Italian Armed Forces. Its officers have since served in international peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
