No signof bedding could be detected, the blocks large and small beingjumbled together in a most irregular manner. A few pebbles ofquartzite and of micaceous grit or sandstone occur, in addition tothe trap-pebbles. Mr. Cowper Reed noticed that the smaller trap-fragments were in various stages of weathering before they were Fig. 4.— View of part of the new quarry in the coarse ashy conglo-merate, south-east of Moons Hill, Stoke Lane, showing thesubangular character of some of the embedded in the matrix. Irregular patches of a fine argillaceoustuff occur in the ashy conglomerate, and these were unsuccessfullysearched for fossils. This quarry, although the best, is not the only exposure of thecoarse ashy conglomerate. If one passes to the east, coarseconglomerate of identically the same type occurs in situ by a littlepond just south of the road, and midway between WalltyningCottage and Tadhill Farm, and blocks of the same rock were metwith at three points in the fields north of the road. At allthese points blocks of a fine-grained pale-green tuff occurred; but,in the main, the material consisted of a matrix of small angular Vol. 63.] INLIER 1ST THE EASTERN MENDIPS. 229 ashy particles, through which are scattered well-rounded pebblesof trap ranging up to a length of 6 inches.
