Milky Way. Coloured radio image of the whole sky, including the Milky Way (stretching from left to right). The colours represent observed intensity, from dark blue (faintest), through light blue, green, and yellow to red (brightest). The Milky Way appears as a band because the astronomical bodies within it are too numerous to be seen individually. They are numerous because an observ- er looking in their direction is viewing along the plane of our galaxy's disk. Image made by combining observations at a wavelength of 20 centimetres from the 25-metre telescopes at Stockert in Germany, and Villa Elisa in Argentina.
