Le Mont St Michel, in Normandy, northern France. France's biggest tourist attraction outside of Paris, stands in the Gulf of St Malo. Celebrated for it's Benedictine Abbey, the island also holds monastic buildings dating from the 13th century, which are widely considered as outstanding examples of Gothic architecture. The island itself is of pure granite, standing 84 metres high above the sand flats.
