Ocean acidification. Models showing past and future states of ocean acidification in the Arctic Ocean and the northern Pacific Ocean. Ocean acidification is caused by increasing amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere (and hence oceans) due to industrialisation. This affects the growth of aragonite-based corals. This model tracked the change over time in aragonite saturation, from 1850 to 1860 (left) to 2090 to 2100 (right). Coral growth is maximal in dark blue areas, while red areas show conditions that are corrosive for coral shells and skeletons. The data is from the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ERM), launched in 2013.
