Thewires from the concealed magnet aremade to pass down the leg of thetable, and beneath the floor orcarpet to the hiding-place of theassistant, who can thus summonspirits from the vasty deep orelsewhere, at his pleasure. It will be found a very convenientarrangement to have the magnetenclosed in a little mahogany box,as shown in the diagrams, in which condition it can readily be fixedin any required position. Fig. Fig. 305. The Magic Bell.—Precisely the same in principle, thoughdiffering somewhat in detail, is the magic bell. The bell, which is MODERN MAGIC. 4*7 of glass, and of the form shown in Fig. 306, is hung up above thestage by tvvo silk or woollen coids, and thus apparently placed whollyout of the reach of human influence. Nevertheless, at the commandof the magician, it becomes endowed with seeming vitality. Thehammer strikes any number of times at command, answers questions(with three raps for yes, and one for no, after the approvedspiritualistic manner), indicates chosen cards, and generally displaysa remarkable amount of intelligence. The reader who has followed our description of the spirit-rappingmagnet will hardly require an explanation of the magic bell. Thebrass cap, from which the hammer projects, contains a small electro-magnet, the wire which carries thehammer being fixed to the keeper, and bringing the hammer
