Woman with fleas. Painting by the French artist Charles Maurin (1856-1914) titled 'La Femme a la Puce' (The Woman with the Flea). The painting dates from 1890. Fleas are insects that use their mouthparts to pierce the skin of their host and feed on their host's blood. They can also act as a vector for diseases. It has been observed in some animals that fleas prefer female hosts to male hosts. It is thought that this may be due to female hormones.
