This painting, titled Education of Achilles, is by the Italian artist Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708-1787) in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Achilles is at right and is being taught by Chiron. In Greek mythology, Achilles was the famed Greek hero of the Trojan War, the Greek who slew the Trojan prince Hector. Chiron was considered the oldest and wisest of the Centaurs, a tribe of beings that were half-horse and half men that were represented as given to violence. Chiron, however, was not - he was considered wise and kind and with a gift for healing and music. He was also respected as a teacher, and among his pupils, in addition to Achilles, were Asclepius, Aeneas, and Theseus.
