Corneal infection in the eye of a 55-year-old man. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. Damage to the cornea can cause painful inflammation and infections. The blood vessels in the eye dilate and parts of the eye may swell (oedema). Cells, such as white blood cells, can be mobilised and build-up in the cornea, resulting in corneal infiltration (top of cornea). Treatment depends on the cause of the infection, but usually antibiotics in the form of eyedrops will be prescribed. Corticosteroid eyedrops may also be used to reduce inflammation. Without treatment, the cornea can become permanently damaged.
