Neck muscles. Computer artwork showing the muscles at the front of the neck. The two muscles going down the length of the cervical spine are the longus colli muscles. The muscles emerging from beneath the jaw and attaching to the vertebrae are the longus capitis muscles. Both these sets of muscles act to flex and rotate the head. The outer three muscles on each side of the neck that attach to the ribs are the scalene muscles. These muscles flex the head to the same side and elevate the first and second ribs.
