Tracheostomy surgery. Artwork of the procedure to open up a patient's airway, a surgical process known as a tracheostomy. This allows the patient to breathe without having to use their nose or mouth. At upper left, after the initial incision, retractors have been used to draw back the overlying tissues to expose the trachea (windpipe). A tracheal incision (trap door incision) has been made. At right, a side view of the throat shows a cuffed tracheostomy tube inserted to allow the patient to breathe.
