Fish otoliths. Macrophotograph of otoliths from four different species of fish. Otoliths are small particles of calcium carbonate that lie in the inner ear of vertebrates like fish and sense the position of the head in relation to gravity during movement and rest. These otoliths were found in the stomach of an albatross (Diomedea sp.) from the Antarctic. Magnification unknown.
