Little Harle was held ofthe barony of Prudhoe by Hugh de Herle in 1240 by the serviceof half a knights fee. After various transmissions, which may betraced in Hodgsons History of Northumberland, it came into thepossession of the Aynsley family, one of whom, Robert Aynsley, ofWest Shaftoe, married a Fenwick,
