This image shows Carlo Maderno's fountain in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, with St. Peter's Basilica behind. The Fountains of St. Peter's Square (Fontane di Piazza San Pietro) are two fountains in St. Peter's Square, created by Carlo Maderno (1612–1614) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1667–1677) to ornament the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica. The older fountain, by Maderno, is on the north side of the square (pictured). St. Peter's Square (Piazza San Pietro) is a massive plaza located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, the papal enclave surrounded by Rome, Italy. St. Peter's Basilica (Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano) is a Late Renaissance church located within Vatican City. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world.
