Serotonin. Computer artwork of a molecule of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, chemical formula C10. H12. N2. O). The atoms are represented as spheres and the chemical bonds that hold the molecule together are shown as sticks. Serotonin is made in the frontal lobes of the brain which control moods. Abnormal serotonin levels are associated with schizophrenia. The anti-depressant Prozac works by preventing serotonin in the brain being destroyed. Serotonin is also widely distributed in the tissues, particularly the blood platelets. It is thought that it plays a role in inflammation similar to that of histamine.
