VAN COTT, Annie Anderson, gene-alogist and historian, was born Nov. 12, 1882, in Skouby, Aarhus Amt,Denmark, the daughter of Ole Ander-son and Minnie Nielsen. She emi-grated to Utah in 1884, together withher parents and a brother six monthsold, and settled in Pleasant Grove,Utah Co. In 1895-1897 her fatherfilled a mission to Denmark, leaving awife and eight small children. On hisreturn Annie, at the age of 14 years,went to Salt Lake City to do housework, and there she has spent thegreater part of her life. She wasalways anxious to obtain an educa-. tion and so worked for her schoolingthrough the eight grades, and aboutthree years at the University of 1905 she was married to Frank Cott, a son of John Van Cott, bywhom she became the mother of sixchildren. While Sister Van Cott hasspent a great deal of her time en-deavoring to raise her children in thefear of the Lord, she has also triedto do outside work. Always having adesire to study and progress, she hastaken advantage of every opportunityto do so. The Lord has said, TheGlory of God is Intelligence andseek learning by study. This hasbeen Sister Van Cotts guide. Whenshe married she had not finished herhigh school, so after she had had her BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA 77 children, she began to take some uni-versity work, first by correspondenceand later attended the classes.
