Al Jahili Fort in the unique oasis city Al Ain Erected in 1898 by Sheikh Zayed The First, the Al Jahili Fort in the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the great landmarks and symbols of the United Arab Emirates' cultural heritage. Located on the border with Oman, Al Ain is known as the "garden city" of the Arabian Gulf on account of its luxuriant vegetation. It is one of the most beautiful spots imaginable for open-air concerts. This expansive fort, in the centre of Al Ain, the Garden City of Abu Dhabi in the emirate's Eastern Province, was built by Sheikh Zayed the First in the 1890s. One of the country's largest forts, Al Jahili was home to members of Abu Dhabi's ruling Al Nahyan family and later re-used by Britain's Trucial Scouts, at the beginning of the 1950s. Now sensitively restored, the Al Jahili Fort is now an active cultural centre and visitor destination. Al Ain "the spring") is the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates with a population of aproximately 500000. It is located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, directly adjacent to the border with Oman. The freeways connecting Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai form a geographic triangle in the center of the country, each city roughly 150 kilometers from the other two.
