They knowhe has been their friend, and always didhis best for local interests. His hand-some and commodious residence was oneof the earliest constructed of its size. The new Normal building, a partof the present structure, was dedi-cated June i6, iSSo, the address be-ing delivered by Judge D. J. Brew-er, now of the supreme court. The waterworks were formallyopened in June, iSSo, and were thefirst built in the state. The worst cyclone ever knownhere passed over the country justsouth of the Cottonwood, on Satur-day, April 20, 18S0. Some fiftybuildings were blown down andthere was ruin in the track of thestorm. Help was at once organ-ized and a hearty response was im-mediately made including over $500in cash. General Grant visited Emporia,July 5, 1880, and his reception wasturned into a Fourth of July cele-bration. He was driven about thecity and to Sodens grove, where hemade a short speech. An immenseconcourse of people greeted and honored him as never any other manhas been greeted and honored inEmporia. At the grove, after be-ing introduced by Col. H. C.
