These were based on the controversy concerning theextension of slavery into the terri-tory acquired from Mexico, whichhad been started by the WilmotProviso and still largely occupiedmens minds. Texas claimed thather western boundary followed theRio Grande to its source. This tookin territory which had never beenpart of Texas, but the claim wasstrongly pushed, and was widelysupported in the South. Should California be admittedas a free State ? If New Mexico and Utah were formedinto Territories, should slavery exist within their borders ?. Zachary Taylor. ^ Zachary Taylor was born in Virginia in 1784, his parents soonafter removing to Kentucky. He received little education, and workedhard till the age of twenty-four, when he obtained an appointment inthe army as lieutenant. He served in the War of 1812 and the BlackHawk and Seminole Wars, rising in rank till he became a major-gen-eral. He gained a high reputation in the Mexican War, energy andreadiness winning him the title of Old Rough and Ready. He wasopposed by many Whigs as a slave-holder (though he did not favor theextension of slavery) and as one who knew nothing of civil affairs. Yehe filled the Presidential office acceptably, dying in office July 9, 1850. ^ Millard Fillmore was born in New York in 1800.
