The head box has also been built to act as asettling tank, thus preventing any sand from entering the pipe line is made of J^-in. steel plates and is in 15-ft. sectionswith double-riveted seams; it is carried several feet above theground on masonry piers. The turbine house is 1,100 ft away from one of the companyssteam power stations, and is a stone building 30 ft. long by 15 by 12 ft. high. The fall from the level of the weir to the cen-ter of the turbine is 26 ft., the remaining 15-ft. fall being obtainedby means of draft tubes. The turbines are of the Victor horizontaltype, and consist of two independent 12-in. turbines in one casing. TURBINE, -MOTOR .\ND BOOSTKR. with the shafts direct coupled; so that when the water is low oneturbine will be used, thus enabling the plant to be worked at its bestefficiency. The turbines will develop 140 h. p. at a speed of 720r. p. m. The electric generating plant consists of a combined bipolardynamo and booster, the generator having an output of 160 amperesat 520 volts and the booster 160 amperes at from 100 to 200 generator and booster are coupled to the turbine by means of afriction clutch, which permits them to be used as an ordinary motor-driven booster plant when only a small amount of water is avail-able. The mains from the generator and booster and the regulatingwires are carried overhead to the steam power station near by,from which the turbine plant is entirely controlled. Two Lundell
