In spots, on the other hand, a markedstrengthening of the wings is a well-known characteristic in theless refrangible region of the spectrum. If this applies in the samedegree to the much more closely crowded lines of the ultra-violet,it may be one of the causes contributing to the extreme weaknessof the spot spectrum in this
