In many instances the demand for water controls distribution altogether. For this reason the forests on the opposite sides of mountain ranges are often composed of entirely differ- ent trees. On the west slope of the Sierra Nevada of California, for example, where there is plenty of moisture, there is also one of the most beautifull of all forests. (See fig. 20 and PI. XIII.) The east.
