One afternoon, after thinking over all these things,I went all alone into the forest, for I was tired of thenoise of the })eopk, and wanted to reflect seriously uponmy future movements, k^uddenly, while walking slowlyalong, I came to the foot of a tree, which at once at-tracted my attention, sc that I stopped to examine it. A great many dead branches of other trees hadfallen upon it, and these were so thick that they preventedthe light from penetrating below.
