Defeated and im-prisoned, after his release be came to this country in 1850and married. William is the second of his seven children,of whom five were boys and two girls. As a lawyer achieved considerable reputation. Naturally elo-quent he accpiired with education and jjractice a wonderfulcommand of language which he used with effect and suc-cess in his legal career, especially with juries. Besidespossessing the gift of oratory in an eminent degree he can. , accomplish an immense amount of work in a comparativelyshort time and is very tenacious and industrious. Hence itis small matter for surprise that be succeeded. Mr. Sulzertook an active interest in politics early in life and always asa pronounced Democrat. In 1884 he stumped the States ofNew York, New Jersey and (Connecticut for his party, andso distinguished himself that in every cami)aign since hehas been called upon to expound Democratic views fromthe i)latform. He rendered yeomans service more espe-cially in the last Presidential contest, and delivered manyeffective speeches, ihe Democratic ])arty leaders are al-ways on the lookout for such bright young men as WilliamSulzer and in i<S89-90-9i-92 he was elected to the .\ssemblyby majorities which increased with his popularity. Hisrecord in the Assembly was so brilliant and his ability sopronounced that at the convening of the last session
