It was completed in176S, from designs furnished by the architect ofSomerset House, in the Strand, Sir William Cham-bers, the son of Scottish parents, but born inStockholm in 1726. It cost ^^30,000, and is anelegant edifice of a somewhat Grecian style, sur-rounded by plantations, canals, and gardens, butin a situation too low for any extensive view.
