Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Fighter Command The first Spitfires in France. Mk IXs of No 144 Wing at Ste Croix-sur-Mer (B-3) on the afternoon of 10 June 1944, the day the airstrip became operational. All Allied landing strips and captured airfields on the Continent were assigned a code number, a 'B' prefix denoting RAF control. B-3 was the first to be completed in Normandy and, despite shelling and the occasional sniper, was soon home to the Wing's three Canadian squadrons (Nos 441, 442 and 443).
