Crude oil pipeline beside a river in Ecuador. This is the controversial pipeline being built by the OCP (Oleoducto de Crudo Pesado) consortium. It is here passing through the ecologically sensitive Mindo Nambillo Cloudforest Reserve. Oil accounts for over half of Ecuador's exports. Much of the oil lies below the rainforests in the east of the country, and pipelines cross the Andes mountains to transport the oil to ports on the Pacific coast. It is thought that the continuing expansion of Ecuador's oil industry will increase the damage being done to the environment. Construction of the OCP pipeline started in 2001.
