The hind wings are whitish stone-coloured in appearance. There is aconspicuous raised crest on thethorax. The caterpillars, in their veryyoung stage, feed in company, butafter the first larval moult theyseparate into parties of eight or ten,but do not move far from theirbirthplace—hence the damage is alldone in one place. When resting,however, from feeding, they re-assemble in comparatively largegroups, as seen in fig. 237. Whenfull - grown they are about 1|^inch in length, rather soft andlimp. Head black, body prevailing colour is a mixtureof yellow and black. In the first three segments behind the headthose two colours are blended in squares, but on the other segments
