Step backward on the right foot; bend theright knee, straighten left leg and incline the body slightlyforward. At the same time the skirts may be grasped ateither side and spread sideways. KNEELING. To kneel in a dance, bend the left knee and place the right knee onthe floor, from which position it is very easy to arise and continue the dance. FINGER SHAKE. Raise the left arm forward waisthigh, forearm parallel to the floor, palm facing the right elbow lightly on the back of the left handand raise the right forearm perpendicular to the left the right forefinger upward. In shaking the fingerthe movement is not so much a flexion of the elbow as arotation of the forearm which turns the finger about onethird of a circle from right to left, thus turning the pointof the finger toward partner. The finger shake may be ex-pressive of accusation, inquisition, derision, playful demon-stration of vivacity or mischievous display of tender senti-ment. 17
