WilliamHarrison, a son of David, put a building over the entrance, but this went into decay before the civil war, and now theopening is altogether without protection. In fact, we hadsome difficulty in getting down the first ten feet, so muchmud and so many leaves had washed in ahead of us. Once in, there was plenty of room. Several of theapartments are very large. One room, near the end, islarger in circumference, I think, than any room in any othercave I have visited except, perhaps, the Grand Cathedral inWeyers. The ceiling, however, is not higher than 15 or 20feet. Vandals have defaced Harrisons Cave shamefully—havebroken off tons of stalactites; and the smoke from candlesand torches has blackened the whole interior; yet in spite ofall this it is a great wonder, and presents many striking.
