. The fundus oculi of birds, especially as viewed by the ophthalmoscope; a study in the comparative anatomy and physiology . ub-sequently divergent rays are now made paral-lel by the convex lens and are thus brought to afocus on the retina-choroid by the dioptricapparatus of the observed eye. Thence thereflected and emergent rays follow the samepath and come to a focus, at X, in the eye ofthe examiner who will see an inverted aerialimage of the observed fundus. The electric self-illuminating ophthalmo-scope differs from the types just pictured inthat it carries its own light source — a bat- tery in the handle. It is peculiarly adaptedto the examination of the eyes of animalsother than Man. One is enabled throughthis improvement not only to dispense withthe cumbersome side light but to make satis-factory examinations of the fundus oculi inonly partially darkened surroundings — seri-ous considerations in doing field work withwild species. A picture of the latest modelof the self-luminous ophthalmoscope is shownin Fig. 21. The fact that a considerable portion of thelight thrown into the interior of the eye.
