THE ABBEY 11 In 1238 a Papal mandate was issued to the Abbot of Lesnes to inductRichard (de Wendover), Rector of Bromley and Bishop elect, into thetemporalities of the See of Rochester.^) There had been a dispute between theCathedral Chapter and the Archbishop of Canterbury which had ended in an appealto Rome, Richard being the nominee of the Monks. Alan ^ne name °f the sixth Abbot is preserved in another Essex fine.(2) It 6th Abbot is dated 32nd Henry III (1248), and is between Robert de Ispania and1248 Alan, Abbot of Lesnes (the latter represented by John of Wallingford, his Canon), and concerns 80 acres of land in Auvelers (Aveley). The demandant quitclaimed to the Abbot for a consideration of four marks of silver. Bu
