I have a few questions I should like to ask as to the growing of lettuce in this Pennsylvania climate. I want to fill one house with lettuce and I never before grew any in the greenhouse. I want to grow Grand Bapids and have the first crop ready in November> after freezing weather, so I can take out every other row aijd have the large ones ready for Thanksgiving. I sowed seed outside August 5; this is up about one inch. I sowed another batch Au- gust 15; this is up nicely, about one- quarter inch. August 20 I sowed seed inside; it is just coming up. ' Which of the sowings shall I trans- plant to the greenhouse benches, to have it at the time desired? How close should it be placedf In watering, should the leaves be wet or should all the watering be done between the plants f For transplanting for the sec- ond crop, after taking off the first, when should the seed be sownf 0. The lot you sowed August 20, if healthy, will probably be best tqx your November crop. You might use part of the sowing of August 16 for earlier cutting, but I think the last lot planted will be best and will not bring in out- side insects to bother later. Transplant the seedlings into the beds—6x8 inches apart for large lettuce, 6x6 if for cut- ting as soon as ready. You need not be especially particular about the watering now, but later it will be necessary to water only between the rows and not wet the foliage much when the leaves get thick, so they will not dry off. The second batch of seed should be sown six weeks after the first lot. "When up, transplant to flats or, better, a bench, placing them about one or one and one-half inches apart, to remain until the first crop is cut off. Fumigate regularly for green fly. H. G. Pierre, S. D.—On the night of Au- gust 29 a cloudburst over the hills sur- rounding Pierre caused a flood that spread over the
