Bedd Branwen Bronze Age round barrow encircling a standing stone has become famous in Medieval Welsh tales (Mabinogi) as the burial place of Branwen, daughter of Llyr, who died of a broken heart beside the infant river Alaw after unintentionally provoking deadly conflict between Celtic warriors of Ireland & Wales. An elaborate mound of stones, slabs, turves & soil retained by kerbstones was built around an existing standing stone & used as a cemetery for 2 groups of human (up to 12 individuals) cremations placed in urns. Pairs of ear bones from new-borns were also buried in pots beside 3 of the adult urns. Long grass growing on the mound has been flattened by autumn floods.
