Blue sky grey clouds horizon view, looking north, sea ice and frost expanse on sand beach north of St Annes, Lancashire, UK
The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast sea ice, several centimetres thick. A blue sky view, looking north to sand winning operations, of a wide expanse of land-fast sea ice and frost on the beach north of St Annes. Commercial sand extraction on the beach north of St Annes was given planning permission in 1989. The permission expires in 2049. During 2013 an estimated mean 300 cubic metres of sand was extracted each day, adding up to a total 78,000 cubic metres a year. A sand winning digger is seen centre background. The extracted sand is tipped at the beach top left background. It is ten taken away by other wagons.
