Light microscopy of lung tissue showing a bronchus. As a major passageway for conduction of air the bronchi are kept open by rings of cartilage (stained blue) in their walls. Just external to the lining epithelium is smooth muscle that encircles the airway and allows limited volume change with breathing. Magnification x60 when printed at 10 cm.
