Second Grinnell Expedition. 19th-century depiction of members of the Second Grinnell Expedition (1853-1856) in Arctic furs. Led by US Navy medical officer Elisha Kent Kane (centre, 1820-1857), this expedition to the Canadian Arctic was one of several attempting to ascertain the fate of the 1845 expedition led by the British officer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847). After the first expedition only found Franklin's first camp, Kane led a second expedition in 1853. Like Franklin, Kane and his crew spent two years in the Arctic, but, unlike Franklin, Kane and most of his crew survived. However, Kane's health was damaged, and he died a year later.
