Scrotal hernia surgery. Close-up of the sigmoid colon (large intestine) removed (eviscerated) from the hernia sac of a male patient undergoing surgery to correct a large indirect inguinal (scrotal) hernia. A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the body wall. Here, the intestines are protruding through a weak area in the abdominal muscles, into the inguinal canal and have descended to the bottom of the scrotum.
