The view becomes more extensive when we reachthe top (I/4 ^^0 embracing the country as far as the Dead then descend into the valley, with the village of En-Nakdraabove us to the right. We take the road to the left. The roadpasses under (10 min.) a conduit. On the hill to the right is aweli. A final ascent of 17 min. at length brings us to Sebastieh. The village of Sebastieh, the ancient Samaria, which in thedays of the Maccabees gave name to the whole of Central Palestine,stands on an isolated terraced hill, rising 330 ft. above the valley. The
