STATUS OF THE SCREW-WORM (Cochliomyia hominivorax) IN THE SOUTHWEST During period June 22-28, a total of 18,372,800 sterile flies was released in areas involving 42,325 square miles. Release rates of 200 flies per square mile were made over an area of 38,462 square miles and 400 flies per square mile over an area of 3,863 square miles. A total of 2,290 screw-worm cases was reported this period. New counties reporting screw-worm cases include: Wheeler and Randall, Texas; and Jackson, Kiowa, Stephens and Ellis, Oklahoma.
