Fresco on an outside wall of the cathedral at Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, the chiefly Gothic Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady). The person depicted may be a man killed in the late 1300s by a bell falling from a church; or it may be the Martyr Saint Proculus, killed by an axe in the time of Emperor Diocletian. Note the pilgrim’s emblem of a walking stick and pilgrim’s bag, plus a large money pouch on his belt - it was said you needed plenty of money to visit Bolzano.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Bolzano, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: fresco on an outside wall. The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
