When Rana Oodeysing [ie Udai Singh II] left Chittore [Chittorgarh] on its capture by the Mogul army he went in search of a site for his palace and a new capital, and while passing over the present site of Oodeypore, which was then a jungle, a hermit, who lived on the mound and had built the little square mass of stones seen in the picture, told the Rana to build his palace by that spot, and so long as the stones remained he would not lose his throne. This was about the year 1570, so the prophecy has held good for nearly 300 years'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
