Cannibals. Engraving of Carib Indian cannibals eating human limbs. The Caribs were a tribe who lived in the West Indies before the arrival of Europeans. They lived in small settlements but gathered together with canoes for seaborne raids on their neighbours. They were fearsome warriors who treated their captives harshly, torturing and eating men and enslaving women. The Carib were virtually destroyed by the arrival of Europeans and today survive only in Guatemala and the island of Dominica. The Caribbean Sea is named after the tribe and the word cannibal is derived from the Spanish term (Canibales) for the Carib. Image drawn during the 18th century.
