PINYON (4200-5600 feet) Figure 3. The seasonal occurrence and abundance of four species of chiggers on Uta stans- buriana in the Pinyon Plant Belt of Joshua Tree National Monument (1959-1966). The presence of larvae on the lizards was calculated by month. April and August are shaded, and October through December are repeated for continuity. The numbers of individual liz- ards examined each month and the total for each plant belt are shown in the lower row. as those taken within and adjacent to the acre plot. We excluded any lizard recaptured im- mediately or one which was dead and decayed. Ninety percent of all records are from the acre plot, with 98 percent from July to March as compared to only 7S percent from March to July. The smaller percentage of Uta from the plot in the spring reflected our seasonal sampling of available lizards from outside the plot. The presence or absence of each kind of chigger on each Uta has been recorded and these data were used to determine the occurrence and abundance of the larvae. Also we can surmise that the unfed larvae emerged and attached several days to weeks prior to recovery in all months except in late winter and early spring (January through March). Each of the three species of chiggers appeared approximately the same time each year. The graphs show the percentage of occurrence of each species of chigger on all Uta examined during that month. A positive host had at least one chigger but we have found a positive cor- relation of abundance with percentage of occur- rence. The bars represent the numbers of lizards examined. The tiny hatchlings (indicated by dark shading) had very few chiggers at
