OSLO, Norway — The Storting Building, the seat of the Norwegian Parliament, stands as a symbol of democratic governance and architectural elegance in the heart of Oslo.

Photograph by David Coleman. The Storting building, located in central Oslo, Norway, is the seat of the country's parliament and a symbol of Norwegian democracy. Designed by Swedish architect Emil Victor Langlet, the building was completed in 1866 and has since played a crucial role in Norway's political landscape. The structure's distinctive yellow brick facade with stone details exemplifies a blend of architectural styles, primarily French Empire and Neoclassical. Its imposing presence on Karl Johan gate, Oslo's main street, makes it a significant landmark in the city's urban landscape. The building's design includes a central section with two wings, creating an E-shaped layout. Inside, the Storting building houses the 169-member parliament, known as the Storting, which derives from the Old Norse word "Stórþing," meaning "Great Assembly." The parliament operates under a unicameral system, having abolished its two-chamber structure in 2009. The building contains various chambers and offices, including the main assembly hall, committee rooms, and the Lagting Chamber, which previously served as the upper house. The Storting building has witnessed numerous historical events, including debates on Norway's independence from Sweden in 1905 and discussions on joining the European Union. It survived the German occupation during World War II, though the occupying forces used parts of the building. Situated near other important Oslo landmarks such as the Royal Palace and the National Theatre, the Storting building is part of a significant historical and cultural area. The adjacent Eidsvolls plass, a small park, often serves as a gathering place for demonstrations and public events related to political issues. Public access to the Storting building is possible through guided tours, allowing visitors to learn about Norway's parliamentary system and the building's history. The structure undergoes regular maintenance and has seen several renovations to accommodate modern needs w
