Breakthrough of the French Boring Machine 'Europa' under the Channel to complete the first of two Eurotunnel rail tunnels.
With the cutterhead from the Robbins-Kawasaki diameter French Tunnel Boring Machine called Europa visible in the background, tunnellers from the UK, France and many other countries around the world celebrate the first undersea breakthrough of a rail tunnel on the Channel Tunnel Project on 22 May 1991 This historic event was the climax of a magnificent tunnelling achievement of excavating 20kms of a tunnel that was started in France on 1st December 1988. The Channel Tunnel is considered to be the 'Greatest Construction Project of the 20th Century' and is one of the wonders of the modern age.
